Quarantine Glow Up

For most of us, it’s been over a month since we first started quarantining. As of right now, NY’s stay-at-home orders are until May 15th (though I have a feeling that’s going to be extended til at least sometime in June). It’s trying times for all of us, but I’m sure each of us could get out of this quarantine just a little bit better than when we first came into it. Whether it’s to be a little more conscious about our hygiene or a little less anxious about the entire situation or even come out with rock solid abs, we all have the time to improve on ourselves just a tiny bit.

I actually created a Youtube playlist called “Quarantine Glow Up” that focuses on glowing up in all three aspects: physically, mentally and emotionally. Some videos are meant for you to follow along, while others were meant to give you some kind of inspiration and calm you down. I also included some that just gave me a good laugh, cause we could all use some right now.

Remember, just do what you can.

Quarantine Glow Up Playlist

Get your body moving. I think getting your body moving is something that everyone should do everyday. Whether it’s just stretching or doing a full body workout. And if you live in a place that’s isolated enough, even go for a walk outside. I’ve seen my neighbor just walk up and down our driveway, which is a fantastic way to get your body moving and get some sun - it’s a double whammy. I’ve been feeling a lot better after I do a full workout. It’s just a great way to boost my endorphins and serotonins. It also gives me a time during the day to not think about anything except for doing something good for myself. I have been following Chloe Ting’s workout videos a lot. They’re fun, short, and includes a variety of movements so I won’t get bored. She explains each movement very well and also includes low impact versions of these movements, so if you live in an apartment with downstairs neighbors or if you’re trying to save your joints - she got you.

To change things up, I also like to follow Blogilates’ workouts. I have been following her workouts for years. Her arm workouts are fantastic and for most of them you don’t even need weights. And for the ones where she does use them, she will also suggest using different items like books, wine bottles, or even tomato soup cans as substitutes for weights. No excuse to not get your body moving.

And if you just want a little cardio fun, I recently just downloaded Just Dance Now on my phone. It’s such a great way to get my heart pumping and my ass sweating. Enjoy laughing at yourself while getting a workout in.

Just so you know, you don’t have to do a full workout, but just try and stretch for five minutes. It’ll help clear your mind.

With so much time on our hands, it’s real easy to kick yourself in the ass because you’re feeling unproductive. Please remember, we’re in the middle of a pandemic here. We’re all going through a very rough time right now. With so much uncertainty around us, it can be easy to get anxious about everything. Personally, my anxiety has been through the roof so I’ve been taking extra time to just do things that calm my mind. Doing things like bullet journaling, to structure my week a little bit, has been helping me a lot. Keeping track of things on paper simply means that I can have one less thing on my mind. AmandaRachLee on Youtube is usually who I follow for bullet journal ideas. But of course you can get ideas off of pinterest, which I do sometimes as well. If writing things down is not for you - a digital journal or notes can help too!

Taking care of ourselves is even more important than ever before. Things like taking a bath, cleaning, etc. can really help realign your focus on things that matter most. Remember: a little me time is important. Get in tuned with yourself, if you need to cry, then cry. I cannot even tell you how many times I’ve cried since quarantine started (it’s a lot). Allow yourself to feel whatever it is you’re feeling. That’s the only way you’re going to actually push past it and not have it creep up on you later. So cry, laugh, be sad, be happy, be a little anxious. After that, you can find ways to help deal with those negative emotions and be at peace with yourself.

I don’t want to say that “we all have a lot of time on our hands now”, because that’s just simply not true. This could ring true for some of us, but for others they still have the same intense work schedule or they have kids to take care of, or they want to spend this time with their families. We all have different priorities. Let’s remember to not judge the people around us for how they’re spending their time.

With that being said, for those of us who do have the extra time and have the mental capacity to, we can learn a new skill. I bit the bullet last month and started using Skillshare. It’s a pretty cool website that has a lot of different courses you can take. The best part is that you can really cater it to your learning style and time. You can skip around different lessons, you can start it and come back in a few days - it’s all up to you. I wanted to take time away from me watching dramas and youtube videos, and to use that time to improve on my skills as a video editor. I’m even learning how to draw because it was something I’ve been meaning to learn for a long time. It’s been a very slow progress so far, but hey, at least I’m trying.

or you can use mine: https://skl.sh/3bPnYYA

At the end of the “Quarantine Glow Up” playlist, there are a few videos that are meant for your viewing pleasure. They really helped take my mind off things. Some of them are so visually appealing and others are just there to make you laugh - cause we can all use a good laugh. I hope you enjoy.

You’re doing great. I believe in you.

Sephora VIB Sale Recommendations

The time has come, the Spring Sephora VIB Sale is now upon us. I don’t know what your stance on Sephora is right now. I know many people boycotting Sephora for promising to standby their employees, just to turn around and lay off their part-time employees by a 3 minute conference call.

I’m going to link some articles, just for the sake of transparency and for you all to have enough information to make a decision on whether or not to continue to support Sephora. My personal opinion on the matter will be at the end.

That being said, I will be providing both links to each products when applicable: one to Sephora, and the other will be a direct link to that brand’s website. (In case you want to buy the product without shopping at Sephora.)

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Makeup Cleansing Balm

This cleansing balm has been my favorite thing to take off my makeup. I wear waterproof mascara every single day and it takes off so easily. A little goes a long way with this product should last you a long time.

For my second cleanse, I like to use something like a gel cleanser. They’re gentle but still leaves my skin very clean. These cleansers don’t leave my skin feeling dry or tight at all.

FAB Facial Radiance Pads
I have pretty much stopped with physical exfoliants on my skin. They’re just not good for you, they can cause micro-tears in your skin. However, exfoliating my skin is something I still need to do. Chemical exfoliators have been my favorite thing. These ones from First Aid Beauty are the ones I’m using right now, and I am loving them. I use them right after my double cleanse. They’re gentle enough for me to use every single night but they’re still effective. I have definitely seen less texture on my skin ever since I started using them.

FAB Ultra Repair Cream

If you have incredibly dry skin, this is the moisturizer I would recommend. It’s an incredibly thick cream that will really sink in and moisturize. I do find that this cream can get a little too thick for me during the spring/summer. I just prefer something a little more lightweight. However, this is the cream I will always buy once the weather starts to get colder and drier.

KIEHLS Ultra Facial Cream

Something that’s a little lighter than the FAB Cream, but still works very well with my dry skin. I’ve heard from my friends that this cream has broken them out before. That has never happened to me, but I thought I would let you guys know. Everyone’s skin is different. On my dry-combo skin, it’s been pretty good to me.

FRESH Umbrian Clay Purifying Mask

This is a new clay mask I’ve been using and loving. It really just goes deep into your pores and cleans everything out. Whenever my skin feels a bit clogged, I love using this to just deep clean my skin.

ORIGINS Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask
I love using this when my skin feels extra dry or I start seeing dry patches. It’s an overnight mask so when I take it off the next morning, my skin feels extra plump and hydrated. It’s literally like your skin drank a big bottle of water overnight. I’ve been recommending and using this product for years. Still a favorite of mine.

NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation
To be honest, I haven’t been wearing a whole lot of foundation for the past year. Whenever I do though, I usually reach for this foundation. I picked the shade Gobi L3, and it’s a little too light for me so I’ll usually mix it with the NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation (direct link or Sephora) in Punjab M1. I really hate that I’m in-between both shades most of the time. Both foundations work great on their own and mixed together though. So if you’re looking for a new foundation - this is it. It just looks super natural on the face while still providing a pretty decent coverage that you can build easily. Leaves my skin looking pretty radiant but not too dewy. Ugh I just love it.

JOUER Essential High Coverage Liquid Concealer
I cannot tell you how many times I have repurchased this concealer, but it’s been a damn whole lot. I want to say around 4 to 5 times now. For the past year, this is pretty much the ONLY concealer I’ve been wearing just up until I forced myself to start trying something else recently. Definitely my favorite concealer at all times. It’s similar to the Tarte Shape Tape concealer but it’s more hydrating. It doesn’t crease too much on me and it covers so well. It blends like a dream and it has a pretty decent staying power - even in the summer. I cannot recommend this concealer enough.

I fell off the liquid eyeliner train as of recently, it’s just too much work and trouble for me. I switched to pencil liner because it’s just more versatile and forgiving. These are super creamy so they don’t skip or pull on my lids, and they have a great staying power.

MARC JACOBS Hi-Shine Lip Lacquer

Lip gloss is one of my favorite products of all time and I’m super picky about my lip glosses. I really think that Marc Jacobs lip glosses are just some of the most beautiful lip glosses I have ever used. They’re a little tacky but nothing that actually bothers me. They have a great staying power for a lip gloss and these just put this incredible shine onto your lips and make them look incredibly juicy. My personal favorite shade is: Pretty Thing which is just a beautiful warm nude.

My personal opinion: I think it’s a pretty shitty thing for Sephora to promise to take care of all their employees and then to just lay them off. I do however, understand this decision as we are in the middle of a pandemic and a lot of businesses are force to lay off people left and right. The thing I can’t seem to understand why they couldn’t just furlough their employees (like a lot of companies are doing), so that their part time employees can at least have their jobs back once we start opening back up.
Will I be shopping at Sephora? I will try my best not to. Honestly, I’m just going to try and do as much research as I can to get the best deal that I can. I’m not loaded with money, so if I can save a few dollars off my purchases right now, I will. After things start opening up again, I try to only shop in-stores (to reduce carbon footprint). If I cannot find a physical store (from the brand) for me to go to, I will most likely be shopping at my closest Sephora. Honestly, my biggest question is: Can Ulta open more stores in NYC?

My NYC Food Guide: Il Corallo Trattoria

If you've known me for awhile, you already know how obsessed with food I am. Constantly willing to try new cuisines and go to new restaurants. And one of the perks of growing up in New York City, is consistently being exposed to different cultures and people. However, I understand that it can be absolutely overwhelming to decide what you want to eat, and where you should go. Therefore, I'm compiling a list of some of my favorite places to eat. Usually these blog posts will also be accompanied with a video; however, I lost all the footage I filmed in the restaurant. Just a warning, if you're here just to find insta-worthy places to go, this is not the guide for you. I'm focusing on the food. If a place happens to be cute, that's just a bonus. With that being said - welcome, to my very first NYC Food Guide.

I'm going to admit, I have an undying love for carbs, especially in the form of pasta. And one of my favorite places to go is a little Italian place tucked away in Soho. Located on Prince Street, between Thompson and Sullivan street, is Il Corallo Trattoria.

IMG_9906.jpg

I've been going to this spot for about 7 years now and it has never disappointed me. They offer such a wide selection of food and they do most of them so well. I say most only because I have yet to try their pizza, since I'm usually here for their pasta. They offer about two pages worth of pasta choices and it ranges from seafood, meats, vegetarian and ravioli. Whatever kind of mood you're in - they have you covered.

IMG_9904.jpg

I wasn't able to take pictures of the decor because it was busy and I didn't want to be rude. It can get pretty packed sometimes and the tables are quite close together, but it's still comfortable in a way. The only time I find the tables a problem is when I come here during the weekend, when the place is packed, and I have to squeeze between the tables. The "windows" also slide open when the weather is nice and warm, so it gives the place more of an open and refreshing feel. It's pretty nice. The customer service is pretty great too. And my favorite part about this restaurant is how affordable it is for how much food you get and it's location.

Starting off with the Crostini Pomodoro. Fresh tomatoes, mozzarella and some chopped up basil on top of a slice of slightly toasted country bread. It's very deconstructed in a way but still giving off the fundamental Italian flavors. This is a dish I order almost every single time I come here. It's a rather light and refreshing dish, which for me is the perfect way to start off a heavy meal.

As I have mentioned, I'm usually here for their pasta. Out of all of their pasta dishes, the Rigatoni Sardi is the one that stands out to me the most. I think it's because this is the dish that made me start to enjoy eating lamb. This dish is the epitome of beauty in simplicity in a dish. The sauce is a basic one using white wine, garlic and olive oil. However it coats the pasta tubes perfectly. Between the mushrooms, the lamb, and the pasta tube - this dish offers different textures to each bite. The lamb is fragrant but not gamey at all. It pairs very well with the sauce. Though it might seem a bit bland, I think this is a dish you have to come and try for yourself. Trust me on this one, it's actually quite flavorful. Unless you're not a meat-eater, this is a dish I would recommend to everyone.

Price: $14.75

Unfortunately, I couldn't possibly eat two pasta dishes and the appetizer all by myself, so I invited my friend to come along. My friend, Stephanie, ordered the Spaghetti Vongole. I did take a bite of her food, just to try it out. Compared to the Rigatoni Sardi, this is definitely less flavorful - it just didn't pack quite the punch I hope it would. However, the spaghetti was cooked perfectly, and I think the flavors compliment the clams very well. The simple olive oil and garlic sauce allowed the clams to shine on it's own. Therefore, it is very important for the clams to be fresh; which, Stephanie claims, they were. And the parsley on top adds a hint of freshness.
